Mr. Grinch is… Memphis?

Okay, I know Christmas usually comes and goes pretty quickly, but not at my house.

In all the hoopla of the holiday season, decorations usually don’t come down at our house until mid-January. Or at least I try.

Memphis doesn’t seem to like that game plan though.Memphis

So I have now developed a sort of OCD when it comes to Christmas Decorations, tree ornaments specifically.

  • Plastic ornaments only anywhere within pet reach! (we do have a few and by a few I mean ‘still in the single digit quantity’ glass ornaments that get placed deep within and well out of pet reach)
  • All ornaments are TIED to the tree. (the little hooks that are used to hang ornaments are bent to completely loop the tree limb)
  • All ornaments that go on the tree are counted, so when it comes time to take them down I know how many if any are missing.
  • All ornaments must be medium/large-sized to avoid being a choking hazard to cats or dogs.
  • The pets are closely supervised when near the tree, and all rough-housing is prohibited when near the tree.

Yes, even with those precautions there will be a few pieces that will turn up MIA but at least it won’t be many.

How do I know that this isn’t foolproof?

Memphis: and I know it was Memphis, he was the only one who was really fascinated with the tree last year, managed to squirrel away TWO christmas tree balls.

The last of which was not found until mid-July! That being said, christmas at our house will not be over until all decorations are accounted for and properly put away.

Anyone else end up finding christmas decorations well into the new year? How do you pet-proof your Christmas tree? I would love to hear you pets Christmas experiences!

that was so cute about Memphis squirreling away those ornaments!
I am Jewish but my first husband was Catholic, I used to decorate for Christmas like crazy! My Angel Bobo was obsessed with the tree! He used to go under it and shake it with his paws until ornaments would fall off or the tree would fall over!
I do hang holiday cards (my current husband is also Jewish) which are proudly displayed until late January (at the earliest!!)

To funny! Personally I’ve never had a cat or dog knock over a Christmas tree (yet). Kevin on the other hand has. Thank you for sharing and I hope you had a Happy Hanukkah!

My cats used to LOVE our Christmas tree so I can definitely relate to the theft of ornaments. Our biggest problem comes from tail wagging. Our Golden could wipe out half of the ornaments with one good burst of excitement. My solution is NO ornaments on the lower branches. Our dogs are both short so it’s not so bad anymore. Good luck with your count this year!

Yup, we know that one! With our now four pups, I anticipate quite a few ornaments being flung across the room via tail despite our precautions. My parents, when their dogs were puppies, went so far as to set up their Christmas tree upstairs last year!

We make sure to loop that wire around the branches too! It’s really to prevent them from falling and shattering since our cats are too lazy to mess with the tree. My black cat does like pawing at wrapping paper and bows, but besides that all the pets are good 🙂

Generally ours are okay as well, they do tend to have moments of weakness. Again, the only one who really seems that interested in the tree is Memphis, although this would be Chloe’s first time being near a real Christmas tree…

That is an awesome idea! We did toy around with that idea, we have two fake light up Christmas trees, but I just can’t bring myself to actually go through with it. Despite all the potential hiccups.

Love your Christmas Tree decorating plan of attack! Luna doesn’t both with the ornaments, but she did just get into the gifts… Oh well! I just have to wrap them all twice! Happy Holidays! Thanks for joining the Holiday Blog Hop!

I’ve had to do that before! Willow decided she wanted to try out my Mother-In-Law’s microwavable slippers for herself. She thankfully never managed (or was interrupted not sure which) to open the actual box, just the gift-wrapping.
